Pool suppliers in Malaysia use the words fiberglass, composite and prefab pool in different ways, and that makes quotes hard to compare. This guide explains what the terms usually mean, how a fiberglass panel pool is built, and what to ask before you choose one.
What do the terms mean?
- Prefab (prefabricated) pool: parts of the pool are made in a factory and assembled on your site, instead of being built entirely on site.
- Fiberglass pool: a pool whose shell or surface uses glass-fibre reinforced plastic.
- Composite pool: a loose term. Suppliers use it for pools that combine materials, so always ask what the shell is actually made of.
Because the terms overlap, ask every supplier for the same three facts: what the wall and floor are made of, where it is made, and what is built on site.
How a fiberglass panel pool works
Our fiberglass panel pools use prefabricated wall panels that are assembled on site. This installs faster than a fully concrete pool and typically costs less, though the shapes are more limited. A concrete pool is built on site and can take almost any shape, depth and feature, which takes more labour and time. Our concrete vs fiberglass comparison goes through the trade-offs in detail.
When a fiberglass panel pool makes sense
- Tight access: panels are assembled on site, which helps when a full shell or large machinery cannot reach the plot.
- Faster build: less on-site construction than a concrete pool.
- Budget: it usually costs less than concrete with a tile finish.
- Smooth surface: fiberglass lamination gives a smooth, algae-resistant surface.
When concrete may suit you better
- You want a custom shape, an infinity edge or several levels.
- You want a tile finish and have room for machinery.
- The plot is large and you want freedom over depth and layout.
Questions to ask any supplier
- What exactly is the pool shell made of, and who manufactures it?
- What is built on site and what arrives ready-made?
- What finish is included, and is the lamination or lining part of the price?
- Which pump, filter and chlorinator come with the pool? Ask for the brand and model.
- What warranty applies to the structure and to the equipment, and who services it?
Our checklist of questions to ask a pool builder covers the rest, including approvals, timeline and payment schedule.
Do not forget the equipment
The shell is only part of the cost. A variable speed pump, a sand filter, a salt chlorinator and a heat pump decide how much the pool costs to run. They all connect to one app through the Smart Pool System. To see how the structure affects your budget, read the swimming pool cost guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fiberglass panel pool cheaper than concrete?
Usually yes, because the panels are prefabricated and install faster. The final price still depends on size, finish and equipment, so ask for an itemised quote.
Can a fiberglass panel pool be built where access is tight?
It often can, since the panels are assembled on site. A site visit will confirm whether your plot works.
