Two pool quotations for the same pool can differ by tens of thousands of ringgit, and the cheaper one is not always the better deal. The difference is usually in what each quote includes. This guide shows how to compare quotations from pool builders in Malaysia like for like.
1. Ask for an itemised quotation
A single lump sum hides what you are paying for. An itemised quote should list the structure, finish, pump, filter, chlorination, lighting, civil works and any extras. Our swimming pool cost guide shows which factors move the price the most.
2. Check the structure and finish match
Make sure every quote describes the same pool: size, depth, concrete or fiberglass panel, and the finish (tile, fiberglass lamination or vinyl membrane). Comparing a tile pool to a vinyl pool is not a fair comparison. See pool structures and finishes.
3. Compare the equipment by brand and model
“Pump, filter and chlorinator” is not enough. Ask for the brand and model of each item, whether the pump is single-speed or variable speed, and whether the equipment can be controlled from a phone. Equipment decides your monthly running cost, so a cheap quote with basic equipment may cost more over time.
4. Look at what is not included
List what each quote leaves out. Common gaps are:
- Plan drawings and the council submission
- Decking, coping, fencing and landscaping
- Electrical work and the power supply to the equipment area
- Water connection and the first fill
- Removing excavated soil
5. Understand who handles approvals
Pool construction generally needs approval from your local authority. Ask who prepares the drawings and who submits them, and whether the cost is in the quote. Our pool builder checklist has more on this.
6. Read the payment schedule
Payments should follow progress, not just dates. Be careful with quotes that ask for a large payment before any work starts.
7. Compare the warranty and after-sales support
Ask what is covered, for how long, and who you call when something breaks. Warranty on the structure and on the equipment can be different. Check that the support is local and that spare parts can be found.
8. Ask about changes to the price
Find out how extra work is priced if the site conditions are different from what was expected, for example harder soil or tighter access. A clear variation process protects you.
A simple way to compare
Put each quotation in a table with the same rows: structure, finish, size, equipment (brand and model), inclusions, exclusions, payment schedule, warranty and timeline. Gaps show up quickly, and you can ask each builder to fill them.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always choose the cheapest quotation?
No. A lower price can mean lower specification or missing items. Compare what is included before you compare the total.
How many quotations should I get?
Two or three is enough to see the range, as long as each one is itemised and describes the same pool.
Can you check a quotation I already have?
Yes. Send it with your site details through our inquiry form or WhatsApp 017-511 5232 and we will tell you what to look at.
