Pool renovation cost in Malaysia has no single price, because “renovation” can mean anything from replacing a pump to re-finishing the whole pool. The honest way to budget is to decide what actually needs fixing, then price each part. This guide shows what goes into the cost so you can plan before you ask for quotes.

What counts as a pool renovation?

  • Surface and finish: re-tiling, fiberglass lamination or a new vinyl membrane lining when the old surface is worn, stained or leaking.
  • Leak repair and waterproofing: finding where water is escaping and fixing the structure or the pipework.
  • Equipment upgrade: replacing an old pump, filter, chlorination system or heating.
  • Automation retrofit: adding app control to the equipment you already have.
  • Layout changes: new lighting, steps, coping, decking or a change to the pool shape.

What drives the cost

1. The condition of the existing pool

A pool with a sound structure and a tired finish is a very different job from one with cracks or a leak. Ask for an inspection first, because the real condition often changes the scope.

2. Size and depth

More surface area means more material and labour. Depth matters too, since deeper pools hold more water to drain, treat and heat. Our swimming pool cost guide explains how size affects price for new pools, and the same logic applies to renovation.

3. The finish you choose

Tile sits at the premium end and takes the most labour. Fiberglass lamination is mid-range and gives a smooth surface. Vinyl membrane lining is the most budget-friendly but does not last as long. See pool structures and finishes for the comparison.

4. Equipment level

Old single-speed pumps and manual chlorine dosing cost less to buy but more to run every month. Replacing them with a variable speed pump, a salt chlorinator or a heat pump costs more upfront and can lower the running cost. A new sand filter is a smaller job with its own price list.

5. Access and site work

Tight access for machinery, the need to drain the pool, and work around decking or landscaping all add to the labour. Mention these when you ask for a quote.

Upgrade the equipment first?

If the pool shell is sound, upgrading the equipment is often the lower-cost first step. You can add app control to your existing pool without rebuilding: see our guide to retrofitting smart pool automation and the Smart Pool System. We can supply the equipment across Malaysia, and your local contractor can install it. See pool equipment supply in Malaysia.

How to get an accurate renovation quote

  1. Take photos of the pool, the equipment area and any cracks, stains or leaks.
  2. Note the pool size, depth, age and current finish.
  3. Say what you want: repair only, a new finish, new equipment or all three.
  4. Ask for an itemised quotation so you can see each part. Our guide on how to compare pool quotations shows what to look for.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renovate only part of my pool?

Yes. Many owners start with the equipment or the finish and leave the rest. A site check will show what is worth doing first.

Do I need approval to renovate?

Minor equipment changes and major structural changes are treated differently. Check with your local authority or your contractor before you start work that changes the structure.

Can you work on a pool you did not build?

Yes. Our smart equipment works with concrete, fiberglass and vinyl-lined pools that we did not build.
